As we approach National Disability Independence Day on July 26th, it is essential to reflect on the significance of inclusivity in our workplaces and communities. This day, marking the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), serves as a reminder of our collective responsibility to ensure equal opportunities and independence for all individuals, regardless of their abilities.

“At Toshiba, we believe that every product we develop should help support the needs of all individuals. By incorporating accessibility features into our products, we not only comply with legal standards but also demonstrate our commitment to fostering an inclusive environment that supports the independence and well-being of persons with disabilities."
Robert Covington, Senior Product Manager
Toshiba America Business Solutions

According to the US Department of Labor, approximately 24.5% of the workforce have some type of disability. One of our core values at Toshiba is to “Deliver the Exceptional”. We strive to go above and beyond to deliver exceptional client experiences in all aspects of our business.

It is in that spirit that Toshiba offers a wide range of ADA Section 508 features on our multifunction products in support of the following critical elements of business:

Empowering Individuals: Accessibility features empower persons with disabilities by providing them with the tools they need to participate fully in the workplace and in their communities. This empowerment leads to greater independence and self-reliance, aligning with the spirit of National Disability Independence Day.

Enhancing Productivity: When workplaces are equipped with accessible products, employees with disabilities can perform their tasks more efficiently and effectively. This boosts overall productivity and ensures that all team members can contribute their unique skills and perspectives.

Promoting Diversity and Inclusion: By designing products that cater to everyone, we promote a culture of diversity and inclusion. This not only benefits our employees but also reflects positively on our brand, attracting a wider customer base and fostering loyalty among our clients.

Legal Compliance and Ethical Responsibility: Adhering to the guidelines set forth by the ADA and other relevant legislation is not just a legal obligation but also an ethical responsibility. It shows that we respect and value the rights of individuals with disabilities, reinforcing our commitment to social justice and equality.

Community Impact: Accessible products extend their benefits beyond the workplace, enhancing the quality of life for persons with disabilities within the broader community. From accessible public spaces to inclusive digital services, our efforts contribute to a more equitable society where everyone can thrive.

I would be remiss if I didn’t highlight individuals living with “invisible” disabilities. Invisible disabilities are conditions that are not immediately apparent to others, often lacking any outward physical signs. These types of disabilities can be just as impactful as visible ones, yet they are frequently misunderstood or overlooked. Recognizing and understanding invisible disabilities is crucial for fostering empathy, awareness, and support for those who live with these conditions. Whether it’s a learning difference, a psychiatric disability, or a chronic health issue, individuals with invisible disabilities navigate unique challenges that deserve acknowledgment and respect.

As we celebrate National Disability Independence Day, let us renew our commitment to creating products that are accessible to all. At Toshiba, we are dedicated to innovation and inclusivity, ensuring that our products support the independence and well-being of persons with disabilities. Together, we can build a future where everyone has the opportunity to achieve their full potential.

Happy National Disability Independence Day!!!
