Honoring Our Heroes Today and Every Day

Every year on November 11th, the United States pauses to honor the men and women who have served in its armed forces. Veterans Day is a day of remembrance, respect, and gratitude for the sacrifices made by those who have defended our nation’s freedom and values. But beyond the parades, ceremonies, and flags that adorn our cities and towns, it’s important to reflect on what Veterans Day truly represents.

As the spouse of a military veteran, I can say that our veterans and service members deeply appreciate the support they receive from family, friends, and their communities. Veterans Day also offers a chance to recognize everyone who actively supports those who have served and who encourages others to strengthen that support for our veterans.

Toshiba is proud to have joined the ranks as a Military Spouse Employment Partner (MSEP) with the Department of Defense (DoD), under their Spouse Education and Career Opportunities (SECO) Program. As a partner, Toshiba is committed to supporting the men and women of our military forces by connecting military spouses with career opportunities at Toshiba America Business Solutions (TABS). We have also partnered with the Heroes in Transition Program (H.I.T.) embracing a national goal of 5% minimum of all employees being Veterans.

There are many ways to show appreciation for veterans on this important day and beyond:

  • Attend a Local Veterans Day Ceremony: Many communities host parades, memorial services, or special events where veterans are honored. Attending these events not only shows support but also fosters a sense of unity and respect within the community.
  • Thank a Veteran: Whether you know a veteran personally or meet one in passing, offering a simple “thank you for your service” can mean the world to someone who has given so much.
  • Support Veterans’ Organizations: Many non-profits and charities work tirelessly to provide resources, medical care, and mental health services to veterans. Consider donating or volunteering with organizations like the Wounded Warrior Project, Disabled American Veterans, or the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW).
  • Advocate for Veterans’ Issues: Veterans often face unique challenges when they return to civilian life, including finding employment, accessing healthcare, and dealing with mental health issues like PTSD. Advocating for better policies and support systems can help ensure they receive the care and respect they deserve.
  • Educate the Next Generation: Share stories of veterans’ bravery and sacrifices with children and young people to foster understanding and appreciation. Teaching future generations about the significance of Veterans Day helps ensure that the legacy of our service members endures.

While Veterans Day is a time for reflection, it’s also an opportunity for gratitude. Gratitude for the men and women who have selflessly served, for the freedoms we hold dear, and for the peace we often take for granted. The spirit of this day reminds us that we are part of a broader community—one where respect, unity, and care for those who have served should be a daily practice, not just a once-a-year observance.

Veterans Day is a reminder of the brave souls who have fought, not for recognition, but for the safety and future of their country. Whether in times of war or peace, veterans have been the backbone of our nation’s security, and they deserve our heartfelt appreciation and respect. This Veterans Day let’s not just say the words but also act on them—support, honor, and uplift those who have served.
